Splinter Cell and overclocking

Splinter Cell

  • Author: UbiSoft
  • DirectX Class 8.1
  • Pixel and Vertex Shaders: Yes (PS1.1)
  • No FSAA. AF set via control panel
  • Beyond3D Caspian Demo

Splinter Cell shows just a slight favouritism towards the FX 5950 Ultra. Not surprising given that it's an Xbox port. Note the lack of AA at the higher IQ settings.

Overclocking

Overclocking tests were carried out in a standard Lian-Li PC60 aluminium case. Ambient temperature was around 20c. No extra cooling was directed at the card. AquaMark3 and UT2003 were rerun to assess this card's potential. We managed a rock-solid overclocked speed of 438MHz core and 792MHz RAM. The core overclock was something of a disappointment; we felt as if 450MHz was a prior gimme. Some reference cards may do 470MHz core. Others may falter at speeds lower than the ones we obtained. Unless a partner has gone specifically targetted the card's cooling, it's just luck of the draw.

The 9800 XT 256MB card is already quick. It just gets a little quicker.

The same can be said for UT2003's high-detail test.
