We reckon that midrange cards should be able to put up a respectable performance in a game that's a few years old now. However, the trio of cards struggle with our settings. You'd have to knock down the image quality to, say, 1280x1024 2x AA 4x AF for genuinely playable framerates.

Quake 4 is playable enough at both settings, though. The GeForce 7600 GS steals a march on the two ATI cards at 1600x1200 0x AA 8x AF.

Our Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory settings are too demanding on midrange cards, evidently. Again, we'd look to lowering the image-quality settings. You must remember that these sub-Ā£100 cards are at the lower end of the current midrange SKUs offered by ATI and NVIDIA, respectively.
