Benchmarks III
Now on to perhaps the most interesting of all the benchmarks conducted thus far, Comanche 4. The benchmark comprises of a helicopter mission flown through some undulating terrain. What sets this benchmarks apart is the sheer number of polygons used in certain sections. The use of fire effects further stress the cards over and above anything we have used thus far. Should make for some interesting analysis. The fact that it is largely CPU-limited further complicates the equation. As usual, 1024x768x32 at the top, 1280x1024x32 in the middle, and 1600x1200x32 at the bottom of the following graphs. Although it can keep some sort of parity with the Ti 4600 at 1024x768x32 and 1280x1024x32, the MSI Ti 4200 really begins to feel the heat at 1600x1200x32. The larger texture size at this resolution really do require more than 64MB of on-board memory. This is further evidenced by the overclocked Ti 4200 (320/608) still falling some 14% short of the benchmark set by the standard Ti 4600 (300/650). It still handily beats the Geforce3 Ti 500, though. Here is where the cream rises to the top. The 128MB of on-board memory on the Ti 4600 truly pays dividends when the going gets tough. The overclocked Ti 4200 (320/608) cannot come close at 1280x1024x32 and above with 2x F.S.A.A enabled. The Ti 4200 does put up a reasonable showing, however. It's largely handicapped by its lack of RAM. We'll try 4XS (reserved only for Geforce4 Ti cards) for fun. Once again, the MSI Ti 4200 is hampered by only having 64MB of RAM, it simply couldn't run at 1600x1200x32 with 4XS AA, hardly needed at this resolution, though. Let's wrap it all up.
