Overclocking

We've established that out-the-box performance is good, but the more adventurous types will welcome the fact that there's further room to manoeuvre.

Applying a small bump in voltage - up to 1.1v - we were able to raise Inno3D's core clock speed to 855MHz and push the 1GB frame buffer up to an effective 4,300MHz.

We ran into stability issues at 860MHz and beyond, but the stable 14 per cent core overclock (denoted in the graphs as "Inno3D GTX 460 OC+") provides a useful bump in performance.

The performance boost is practically linear, with average frame rates in Aliens vs. Predator and DiRT 2 jumping by up to 14 per cent and 12 per cent, respectively.

There's fun to be had when it comes to overclocking, but what about the components that matter most to the more discerning buyer?
