Introduction

It's been a little quiet on the graphics-card front since NVIDIA released the GeForce 400-series roughly two months ago. ATI hasn't been perturbed by NVIDIA's newest GPUs and therefore is no rush to launch a new architecture or to lower prices on its Radeon 5-series cards.

Drilling down, ASUS is no stranger to having multiple SKUs for both companies' GPUs. Just peruse the catalogue and you're presented with no less than seven Radeon HD 5870s. Buying the right graphics card isn't as straightforward as it may seem on first glance.

As we're eight months into ATI's flagship architecture and a number of partners have released custom-designed cards, ASUS has now done the same with the £400 MATRIX Platinum. We take a look at the pre-overclocked card and make sense of it all.
