Frugal is not a word we'd associate with the Radeon HD 4870 X2. Packing in both 8-pin and 6-pin PCIe power connectors, much like the three-series X2, a stout PSU will be required to power one of these under-load 300W+ babies.
The fan is generally quiet under load, and given just how much heat it needs to transfer from the near-2bn transistors, it does a remarkably good job.
In typical dual-slot cooling style, hot air is exhausted from the vents at the top, and there's plenty of that when 300W+ has to be moved from the two GPUs.
