Benchmarks: Core Performance

PiFast tests the throughput of a single core. The Jaguar architecture, clocked in at 2,050MHz on this model, is just where we'd expect it to be. We've used PiFast for over 10 years, building up results, and it's illuminating to see that this 25W, Ā£40 APU is about the same speed as the single-core AMD 'Barton' XP 3200+ from 2003.

Yet there are four Jaguar cores inside the Athlon 5350, not one. They combine to offer reasonably impressive performance in Cinebench. These cores are arguably better, and certainly more power-efficient, than the four found in the 65W A8-6500T, powered by the Richland architecture. Imagine what eight Jaguar cores - as present in the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One - could do in this well-threaded test.

Again, Jaguar puts up a decent showing, especially for its size and cost. We can usually glean a fairly good idea of CPU oomph by taking these three results into account; the Athlon 5350's CPU component is good enough to handle everyday tasks without problem.
