Multi-threaded performance: video-encoding, image editing, file compression

But what happens when you crank those cores to the hilt?

wPrime uses as many threads as you can throw at it, to test the computational ability of the CPUs. Core i7 975 EE is about 40 seconds faster than a Core i7 930, which is kind of expected. The same-clocked Core i7 980X is 85 seconds faster than erstwhile champion. The 975 EE is 49.9 per cent slower than you know what, then.

46.3 per cent faster in the file-compression benchmark

Bibble is an image-editing program that's tasked to convert 200 photographs from the RAW format (1.63GB) to same-resolution JPGs (267MB). Able to take advantage of cores, the 980X EE is 31.8 per cent faster here.

Media-encoding performance

The first pass of the media-encoding benchmark is lightly threaded.

But the second pass ramps up load to near-100 per cent, and 980X is 45 per cent faster than 975 EE.
