Multithreaded app performance - file compression and media encoding
Multithreaded performancewPrime v2.02 multithreaded - 1024M calculation | ||
---|---|---|
Intel Core i7 920 | Intel Core i7 930 | AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE |
318.02 | 298.27 | 378.87 |
The Core i7 930 shaves 20 seconds off the 920's time, which in turn is a minute faster than AMD's Phenom II X4 965 BE. Cores and threads are pushed to the maximum here.

The file-compression benchmark shows a similar story. One would do well to remember that the Intel chips are 55 per cent dearer than AMD's. In this context, the 965 BE's performance is more than adequate.

---|---|---|
Intel Core i7 920 | Intel Core i7 930 | AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE |
65.38 | 68.91 | 71.95 |
A turn-up for the books. AMD's best consumer chip steals a march on both Intel offerings. The reason why it is faster on the first pass is down to how the benchmark is threaded. It's fairly light in this instance but ramps up load, to 100 per cent, on the more-compute-intensive second pass.
x264 HD benchmark - pass two | ||
---|---|---|
Intel Core i7 920 | Intel Core i7 930 | AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE |
25.83 | 27.44 | 21.9 |
Core i7 930 is about 25 per cent faster than AMD's 965 once the second portion of the benchmark kicks in.
