Let's do some comparisons. Though the Ryzen 7 3800X shares the same 8C16T topology as the first-generation Ryzen 7 1800X, it is about 30 per cent faster for video encoding and 24 per cent faster in Blender. Sounds good, right?
However, it is only marginally faster than the cheaper, lower-power Ryzen 7 3700X, and that's its main competitor from AMD's own stable.
Looking across to Intel, this chip is slower than the Core i9-9900K for light-load tests, but is a good match for it during multi-threaded workloads. Not bad when it's about 20 per cent cheaper.
The value prop of the Ryzen 7 3800X really depends upon which processor you compare it against. It can look good, it can look average.
