The news

Lite-On is promising to launch an HP-branded external HD DVD reader - the hd100 - but hasn't yet revealed the price or availability of this next-generation drive.

The hd100 is said to play back HD DVD movie discs on a PC at full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and connects via USB 2.0, rather than having an HDMI port.

Our presumption is that the reader comes with suitable playback software and that viewing movies in HD requires a PC with a new, modern and fast graphics processor. We're less sure about whether the HP unit will also let you view HD DVD movies on a TV set fed by the PC but, if it does, then we guess that the PC will also need to have an HDMI output.

The HP is a reader, not a writer, so can't burn to HD DVD blanks. It can, though read all standard DVD formats - with the exception of DVD-RAM - as well as CD-R/RW and CD-ROM.
