Day One, 6pm

6pm
Well that’s finished. Time to install Vista! ‘Woot’, as they say online.

In goes the disk and oh no! Hang on! I haven’t backed up my e-mail! Cancelcancelcancelcancel!

Phew, that was close. Right let’s see, file, export, export to file, file type .pst... no, no, no, don’t save it on the C drive, I’m wiping that. Ok, stick it over here. Cool.

Right, Vista time!

Yes, install.

Yes, go online for updates. Shouldn’t I be doing this from a cold boot or something? No? Seems happy enough... yes, yes, install yourself on C. Yes, I know there’s data on there, just wipe it all off.

Ah, there we go.... right, you’ve had my product key and I’ve set up where I am and what time zone so just get on and install. Why oh why does it ask where you are and then what your time zone is? I can understand it if I was Russian or American, but why can’t it just default to GMT when I select UK?

7pm
What’s this? A black screen with a white mouse cursor? Let’s give it a wiggle. Oh, the computer rebooted! Part of the install process perhaps? Hang on, what’s this? A dual boot screen? With a choice of either Vista or Vista! What????

Right, that’s it, you’re getting the boot from a hard reset treatment Mr Vista install! BIOS here I come!

9pm
Ok, so Intel might make the best CPUs in the world but their BIOS is a pain in the bum! I mean, how come the boot menu has two settings, advanced and standard, and in BOTH of them you can change the boot order but it only actually makes a difference if you leave it set to advanced? What’s the point in that?
Right, here we go, Give me Vista over a freshly wiped C drive.. go baby go!

11pm
Ok, this is getting silly. God knows how many reboots I’ve had... I thought this was supposed to be easy?

And what IS the difference between the work and home PC settings? It’s not like Vista gives you much of a clue... It says the same damn thing under each option. Still at least the install seems to have gone well.

That Welcome screen is annoying though, so once I’ve grabbed the special extras available only to Ultimate users, I’ll kill it off.

Ok, so Vista Update, which is still called Windows Update, says it has installed five Ultimate Extras. I’m buggered if I can find them though... so I’ve no idea what wonderful extras I’ve now got.

One thing I do know is that the damn User Control thingie is getting switched off right now. How bloody annoying is it for Vista to ask for your ok EVERY time you want to do ANYTHING? I’ll tell you how annoying... very, very, VERY annoying. In all honesty I can’t see the point of it. If it’s aimed at cack handed users who’ll install any old crap they bought off QVC, double checking with them is hardly any way to stop them sodding up their machine, is it? And for people like me, who know that the file I just downloaded is an .exe file and yes, I really do want to run the damn thing, well I do have at least half a clue as to what I’m doing, so let me bloody well get on with it!
