Good news for PC retail
Microsoft UK director for consumer and online propositions, Ashley Highfield, predicted that 14 million PCs would be sold in Britain over the next year and, as Microsoft holds a 95 per cent share of the consumer market, that's going to be a very big win for Win 7.
Highfield was backed up by category director at DSGi - owner of PC World and Currys - Jeremy Fennell, who maintained that the amount of positive early reviews of the new OS from beta testers had amounted to an "unprecedented" number of pre-order sales. In fact, DSGi, said Fennell, had managed to sell more copies of Win 7 in a three week pre-order promotion than it had managed to sell copies of Vista in the whole of its first year.
DSGi said it planned to run another promotion from the 22 October, in which the retailer promised to knock £150 off the price of a plethora of new Toshiba and Dell laptops, whilst also offering a £100 trade in bonus for any punter swapping their old PC for a brand spanking new Windows 7 system.
