The news
Sony is planning to introduce in autumn five new sub-families for its BRAVIA range of TV sets, in among which are four models with full 1080p high-definition - two LCD and two back-projection.
The 1080p LCD models, one 40in, the other 46in, are members of the W2000 series. Bigger still are the two 1080p Micro Display Projection sets, a 55-incher in the A2000 series and a 70in R2000-series model. Each of the four has a digital terrestrial tuner and two HDMI inputs - features that are common in many of the other newcomers.

W2000-series models are reckoned to have "uncompromising resolution and high-performance LCD panel technology for exceptionally wide viewing angles", while the 1080p projector TV sets use triple-panel projection systems centred on Sony's SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) technology for what's described as "next-generation picture quality".
SXRD is claimed to eliminate almost entirely the grid effect seen on many back-projection TV sets - to give an image reckoned to be of "almost cinematic clarity and focus".
For mere mortals - or those with ordinary-depth pockets - Sony will also be offering a trio of 1080i LCD models in the U2000 series - with screen sizes of 26in, 32in and 40in - plus an E2000-series 50in/720p back-projector that's centred on Sony's cunningly-name three-LCD system, 3LCD.
Having said that, there are still no clues from Sony about likely prices of the new sets - though we'll report back if we do manage to get any info.
