PS2 beats Xbox 360
Since the Xbox 360 appeared on the scene back in December 2005, U.S sales figures show that Sony's PS2 has outsold the Microsoft console in every month bar one.
PS2 sales remain strong with a huge 473,000 units being sold in the last month alone. The Xbox 360 has sold 246,000 units.
Whether this is a price issue - the PS2 weighs in at $129 whereas the 360 costs approximately $399 in the U.S - or a measure of the power of the Playstation brand is hard to tell but, the continuing sales will bolster Sony's confidence in shifting PS3 units, despite the high price tag of $599 for a premium unit.
The PS3 is a far cry from the PS2 which is exclusively a gaming console. Microsoft have described the PS3 as nothing more than a next-gen DVD player, whereas Sony have made it clear that the PS3 could replace home computers due its many 'PC' type functions.
Due to the high price tag and its multitude of functions, the PS3 may not attract those PS2 gamers who are only interesting in games, but Sony will hope that recent PS2 sales are an indication of what can be achieved with their latest all singing, all dancing console.
