Stunning single player campaign
The single player consists of a decent variety of solo and team based missions across some stunning locations. Objectives range from defending areas against enemy onslaught, tip-toeing across a heavily guarded cemetery in order to reach an extraction point, planting a charge on a Black Hawk helicopter and jumping into the gunner seat of a helicopter in order to escort a friendly convoy to safety. The helicopter scenes are better and more intense than ever before, the locations are well designed, albeit with a linear path to each goal, and every environment emits the same tense atmosphere that we’ve become accustomed to in the Ghost Recon games.
The controls are easy to pick up and translate well to the controller, although the amount of options available can sometimes be overwhelming. The excellent tutorial does however ensure that you’ll be competent enough to go into your first battle with a sound understanding of how to aim, control team-mates and move your drones across the battlefield. The first thing you'll need to understand is the various pointers that appear on the HUD (for anyone who’s played GRAW they are identical).
The arrows are colour coded, yellow arrows point to your next objective, red arrows indicate enemy positions, and blue arrows indicate team mates’ geographical locations. The in-game map shows you a more precise location of these points, where you'll be able to send in a drone, an Apache helicopter or a tank to take out the enemy before you arrive on location. You'll never be lost in GRAW 2, if in doubt head towards the yellow arrows and you can't go far wrong.
The in-game map is more crucial than ever in planning an attack. You can send your troops to any position you choose by pointing to a spot and pressing upwards on the d-pad, send a drone on a spy mission to survey the area or look for a suitable way point to flank your enemy. The map is fairly compact, detailed and user-friendly and if you need a quick explanation of the map symbols you can view the map key at any point in the game.
