Flying missions are cool...

Although the majority of my Superman Returns experience involved putting out numerous fires across the city and fighting Metallo’s minions and the big bosses, one of the highlights was the flying races. Racing against the baddies using your boost function whilst weaving around towering buildings accurately gives the impression of speed and power and is a welcome change from the repetitive combat. The flying mechanics are excellent and Superman responds smoothly to your button presses elegantly twisting and turning while his red cape blowing in the wind. Superman has an impressive take-off boost activated with the ‘Y button, hold it down while in the air and you can land on the ground with an earth shattering bang which sends those around you tumbling to the ground.

One of the most impressive aspects of Superman Returns is the activity on the ground and although the graphics are far from being stunning, EA have accurately portrayed a busy city with people going about their daily business and plenty of cars travelling up and down the streets. As you fly over the heads of pedestrians they’ll often wave, cheer or even scatter if you inadvertently (or deliberately) decide you want to test out the destructible environment.

Unfortunately, travelling across the City seems pretty random and although there are markers that point you in the right direction to the next objective, on numerous occasions we would just fly in a random direction hoping that we would bump into a challenge, unfortunately when we did, it was often another boring fight against the bots that did little to put us into that Superhero mindset.
