Fear not, DivX and Xvid are supported

The dashboard update for Microsoft's Xbox 360 is imminent and many users are waiting patiently to play all their various DivX and Xvid files (downloaded legally we're sure) on a shiny big screen via the console.

Though often talked about, the full list of features implemented in the dashboard update barely mentions DivX and indeed makes no mention of Xvid at all, leaving plenty of us in need of more answers.

Kindly, the Xbox team has stepped forward on an official blog to give all the details on video playback we could ever need. Answering a whole 39 questions, the FAQ details exactly which filetypes it will be able to play and even takes the time to show a sample way of organising your video hierarchy in order to make it easy to navigate via your console.

The important thing is, the majority of your DivX and Xvid files should play without problem.

still enormously disappointed by just how limited the support is in practice - limited containers, which can only use limited codecs, with no cross-mixing (e.g. no h264 allowed other than in .mov form)
I really dont know why you are unhappy with h264 support. Not sure what you mean by just mov files.
I tried various differant formats and apart from ts files the rest have all played including h264
I think this has been a great update, no more transcoding changing from xvid to dvd/wmv files.
All we need now is the Media Center update to be able to use the newer support formats in MCE.
But otherwise a good job by MS, not often we say that. PS3 still has no xvid support:)

What exactly does the Xbox 360 support for H.264?

Xbox 360 supports the following for H.264:

· File Extensions: .mp4, .m4v, mp4v, .mov

· Containers: MPEG-4, QuickTime

· Video Profiles: Baseline, main, and high (up to Level 4.1) profiles.

· Video Bitrate: 10 Mbps with resolutions of 1920 x 1080 at 30fps. See question number 11 for more information.

· Audio Profiles: 2 channel AAC low complexity (LC)

· Audio Max Bitrate: No restrictions. See question number 11 for more information.
Can't get many Divx's or Xvids to work despite the update, only one has worked so far, its a nice touch they just need to expand on it.
All my stuff has worked so far

as SPECIFICALLY mentioned in your post, it will only play h264 content in a quicktime container. that's what i mean. it won't play h264 in other containers, like, say, AVI or OGM
