Proving that enthusiasm is what counts
SCAN were at the recent i29 Multiplay event in Newbury and boy were they ever there in force. All there systems were on show that were designed, in SCAN’s words, “to show folks what we can do” and to give hard-bitten, caffeine fuelled gamers a bit of respite from Deagles, AWPs and Railguns.
Now we often hear the phrase ‘by the gamer, for the gamer’ or some such variations thereof. Now you might call me cynical, but anyone who rolls out that phrase to show they’re ‘down with gamerz’ deserves a swift kick in the jewels. Why? Well, can you imagine a company run by gamers? I mean, real gamers. You’d never receive your order because they’d all be too busy pwning on CSS. If you did receive your order, it’s most likely come in a Dominoes Pizza box and be packed in empty Pringles tubes. Heaven help you if you had to do an RMA as the returns department are all points building in BF2142. And Tech support? Forget it, they’re off on a mass PvP in WoW.
My point? Gamers make lousy business people. Gamers are great at being gamers but, if they really are gamers, they’re useless at most everything else… I wouldn’t trust one to look after my gran if I knew there was a PSP within a hundred yards.
Yeah sure, I’m unfairly stereotyping and broadly generalising, but the point is valid. How can any successful company be ‘by gamers, for gamers’? At some point they had to stop being gamers and start being business people… but at that point, they run the risk of losing touch with the very people they cater for… and ‘by business people for business people’ just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
Now you might wonder what this has to do with SCAN but it’s a very important point. From the stuff that SCAN were doing for the i29 attendees, it ‘s obvious that these guys are in tune with gamers… but if you check out the feedback on SCAN, (their profile on HEXUS.trust is a good place to start), you’ll soon see that not only are they supplying the kit and support gamers need, they do it damned efficiently too.
