The game that your neighbours will hate

4. PaRappa The Rappa

The beloved rapping puppy and hip-hop icon is widely regarded as establishing the rhythm action videogame genre and has spawned a variety of music and timing based games.

Once again, it simply involved replicating commands that appear on screen, but it also demanded that the player not only get the sequence correct but also the timing of the sequence. The game provides small portions of spoken vocals that are triggered when the appropriate buttons are pressed. Pressing the buttons in the correct order, with the correct timing, provided an intelligible imitation of rap, while pressing the buttons in an incorrect order or with lousy timing rewards the player with nothing more than unintelligible garbage.

Although the game was simplistic, it was the range of characters, the funny raps and the quirky style of PaRappa the Rappa that made it so endearing. Who can forget Chop Chop Master Onion's Rap?

3. Singstar

The ultimate karoke game has been unchallenged since the series began in 2004.

SingStar games require players to sing along with music in order to score points. Players interface with their console via SingStar USB microphones while a music video plays in the background. The pitch players are required to sing is displayed as horizontal grey bars, which function similar to a musical stave, with corresponding lyrics displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Sony has milked the franchise a bit with 17 titles released so far, including rock, pop, R&B, even Bollywood version, but you can't deny that it's a brilliant social game that has brought he Karaoke craze into households all over the world.

With online features in the PS3 version, the Singstar franchise has now evolved, bringing competitive Karaoke to a new level.
