Skobbler has announced that its free-to-use turn-by-turn sat nav app is now available to UK users of the iPhone 3G or 3GS.

Promising to "change the way we navigate forever", the Berlin-developed application hopes to "rock the billion pound navigation industry" by offering a free alternative with dynamically updating maps.

Taking a community-driven approach to navigation, Skobbler makes use of map data from OpenStreetMap - a Wikipedia-like service through which users can view and edit map information.

Although that potentially leaves the service open to user error, Skobbler hopes that its ability to offer free dynamic updates will become "a genuine alternative to costly and slow updating sat navs".

The freeware ad-supported app offers both visual and voice navigation, birds-eye graphics, support for iPod music playback during navigation, auto navigation resume following calls, and an integrated pedestrian mode.

An ad-free version of Skobbler is also available at a cost of Ā£1.19 from the iTunes store.
