Slowly does it

A village in Kent has the dubious honour of having the slowest broadband in the UK, according to a survey from a price compression website.

Research from Top10.com named the village and civil parish of Farningham the slowest broadband spot in the UK with its 1.30Mb average connection - that's about 45 minutes to download an album and 12 hours for a film!

The website carried out over 98,000 speed tests between August and October of this year, with each village, town or city being subjected to at least 50 speed tests each. Top10.com found the average UK broadband speed registered on its site in the period was 6.86Mb.

The website discovered that the village of Duns in the Scottish Borders had an average download speed of 1.43Mb taking the silver medal and the village of Hanbury in Warwickshire bronze, with an average download speed of 1.51Mb.

Overall, many of the 20 locations with the slowest broadband in the UK are perhaps unsurprisingly in rural locations, demonstrating a clear rural/urban divide when it comes to the net. However the city of Worcester made the list with an average download speed of just 2.01Mb.

Interestingly the research found there was also a north/south divide with Farningham and Holsworthy in north Devon the only places south of London that made the top 20 list of broadband blackspots.

Scotland has 4 of the slowest UK locations, while Lincolnshire has the worst record at county level with three villages and towns making the list.
