Price war breaks out over XFX HD 4890 graphics cards
HEXUS.channel has exclusively learnt that AMD's premier distributor Avnet has suddenly and without warning dumped its entire stock of XFX Radeon HD 4890 graphics cards at a knock down price.
Apparently Avnet had been selling these cards to trade for around £161 but, in order to get rid of them ASAP, has knocked them down to more like £130, a drop of around 20 percent.
It's not yet clear whether or not this extraordinary action by Avnet is indicative of a more permanent problem between itself and AMD's prized new AIB partner XFX, which was previously an exclusive NVIDIA AIB and arguably the greenest jewel in its crown.
Just as mysteriously, it looks like the entire stock of bargain cards, thought to number over 70, has been snapped up by one e-tailer - Novatech.
Furthermore, it seems rival etailer Overclockers UK has caught wind of this and put pressure on one of its key suppliers of ATI graphics cards, which presumably includes XFX branded ones - distributor Enta - to follow suit.
Apparently Enta has duly supplied at least 60 of the cards to Overclockers at the knock-down price and is expected to seek a substantial rebate from XFX in compensation.
