Letter to speed-testers
Specifically Virgin Media wrote to a bunch of speed-testers to share its concerns and propose a solution. Here's the letter, verbatim:
Are you 50 Mbit/s ready?
I am writing to alert you to a new initiative that Virgin Media is launching, which is intended to help educate consumers about the speed testers which are capable of accurately measuring the new generation of superfast Internet services. This will include our own upcoming 50 Mbit/s service which we are currently undertaking final trials.
We are proposing to launch a monthly speed test programme, measuring the accuracy of the major speed test sites on our 50 Mbit/s service. We intend to publish the results of these tests along with the methodology on our website. The first round of testing will commence at the end of this month, with the first publication of data currently scheduled for 3rd November.
Our goal is to support all speed sites to ensure as many as possible accurately reflect the superfast speeds our fibre optic offering is capable of delivering. We have engaged in recent weeks with a number of sites to communicate best practice in measuring high speeds and we are committed to making our technical team available for consultation for any major site wishing to ensure that their testing approach can accurately measure this type of new high speed broadband service.
We are also happy to discuss the technical testing regime we propose, including the steps we are taking to ensure that our testing is as accurate as possible.
