Total War: Rome II

Providing an excellent mix of strategy and action, Total War: Rome II's epic turn-based gameplay can swallow hours of your life. Our 60-second benchmark uses the built-in Extreme preset at 1080p and the Ultra preset at 4K.

Our final game tells us more of the same: the 980 Strix is a step ahead of Nvidia's reference card, but it's by no means the fastest GTX 980 on the market.

At 1080p the GTX 970 is the better bet - it is keenly priced and offers more than enough power to drive games at a standard full-HD resolution. It's at 4K that the GTX 980 perhaps makes more sense. The difference between 35 frames per second on the 970 Strix and 43 frames per second on the 980 Strix is noticeable, though once again, it's questionable whether or not the gain is enough to warrant the sizeable premium.
