Power, Temperature and Noise
Want to know why Nvidia is at pains to talk about the energy-effiicient nature of the Maxwell architecture? Taken as a system-wide total, the Radeon R7 265 uses 45 per cent more energy. Expressing it a different way and drawing other comparisons, GTX 750 Ti performs 25 per cent faster than a GeForce GTX 650 Ti... but uses even less power.
There's really no need to strap a large fan on top of a card that rarely, if ever, consumes 60W. The small fan on the reference card is more than capable of keeping the GPU cool and unflustered.
The benefit of dissipating what can be termed an entry-level TDP for a discrete graphics card is a lack of noise - the card's fan spins up to a maximum of 49 per cent.
