Ah, this is where the use of a Tahiti-class GPU hurts. The Pitcairn XT GPU powering the real HD 7870 is significantly more efficient, even if you factor in the 10 per cent performance deficit.

And keeping such system-wide wattage in check pushes noise and temperature to levels that are, at best, average.
