Benchmarks: Multimedia

Our core and memory benchmarks have shown the i5-4210Y to be an able performer in light usage scenarios, but heavier workloads will prove to be more problematic. All available cores are used during video encoding with HandBrake, and the ultra-low-power chip averages 19.5 frames per second.

The result could be viewed in two ways. On the one hand performance is poor for anyone looking to do serious multimedia work, yet on the other hand the i5-4210Y manages 1.7 frames-per-watt, making it one of the most efficient chips on show and second only to the i5-4250U.

LuxMark utilises the CPU and GPU components of all the chips on show, and it's a sign of things to come: the i5-4210Y's integrated HD 4200 graphics are far from the most potent.

Roughly 35 per cent slower than an Intel NUC seems to be a recurring theme. Is that a performance drop that you'd be willing to accept in a portable tablet?
