Details of a new member of the ATIV range of devices briefly appeared upon Samsung’s official site and have since been removed. The product page showed what appears to be a rather standard, but upmarket, clamshell style notebook PC equipped with a touchscreen and running Windows 8.

Until now Samsung has reserved the ATIV sub-brand for innovative new generation Windows (8 Pro/RT/WP8) devices specially designed to make the most of the features of the new OS. Other members of the ATIV range include a smartphone, a tablet and a couple of convertible hybrid laptops.

The new ATIV Book 6 description revealed this new member of the ATIV range to be a standard notebook packing a touchscreen. The touchscreen seems to be enough for something to be included in the ATIV camp; I noted another recent Samsung new product, the full HD Series 9 Ultrabook, wasn’t touch enabled.

What do we know of the ATIV Book 6 specs? Luckily the folks over at SammyHub made a note of them before the page was taken down:

  • Screen: 15.6-inches, full HD 1920x1080 pixels
  • Processor: Intel Core i7
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon HD8870M GPU
  • Audio/Visual: JBL stereo speakers, 720p HD webcam
  • RAM and Storage: 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD (no SSD or hybrid drive?)
  • Ports and connectivity: WiDi support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, Gigabit LAN, HDMI and VGA ports, USB 2.0/3.0 ports
  • Battery life: 8 hours

UPDATE: The ATIV Book 6 is just one of a large range of upcoming clamshell designs

A commenter upon the Engadget coverage of this ATIV Book 6 leak added a link which reveals a very range of new ATIV Book Laptops; the ATIV Book, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8. There’s a wide range of specifications and some of the models consist of as many as four sub-models with varying specification. Some even seem to omit the touchscreen present on the ATIV Book 6, so it looks like there is no such requirement to be part of the ATIV family...

The ATIV Book 6 was listed at $1,200 before being removed from Samsung’s website. We have no further info regarding the release dates and prices for this large new range of laptops from Samsung.
