The release of the Nvidia Titan Z later today is now reportedly not going to happen. VideoCardz (via SweClockers) reports that Nvidia's plans have changed as the Green Team want to do some last minute design tweaks to to further maximise performance.

The rumours about the non-showing Nvidia graphics card suggest that the dual-GPU behemoth may not have it all its own way against AMD's award-winning Radeon R9 295X2 in games. The Titan Z was waved in front of the attendees at Nvidia's annual GPU Technology Conference in San Jose last month. Back then Jen-Hsun Huang listed the spec as 5,760 CUDA cores and 12GB of 7Gbps GDDR5 memory providing 8 TeraFLOPS of performance. However, after mulling over the impending launch, Nvidia seems to have decided against making the Titan Z available today.

The March 25 press shot of the Titan Z and a more recent retailer shot show that there have been slight modifications to the design. You can see in the side-by-side pic above that the retailer product shot on the right is a triple-slot bracket design. Previously it looked like it would take 2.5 slots. This hints at Nvidia expanding the air cooling area/capability of the Titan Z. This would be necessary to enable faster component frequencies to face-off against AMD's liquid-cooled Radeon.

Right now we are just waiting for some official word about what is happening with the Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan Z. Hopefully we will hear or see something in the next few days.

Damn, that's it my triple pre-order is cancelled! ;)

Does it matter? Is anyone really going to buy one?
I'm with shaithis, order for several units now cancelled - guess I'll just have to make do with current GPU for my 1920x1080 res for time being ;-)
The rumours about the non-showing Nvidia graphics card centre around its performance not being able to match the AMD Vesuvius in games, despite its costing around twice as much to buy.

If this really was the case then AMD have missed a trick there, imagine if they had waited until the Titan Z was out and then slapped it with something faster, cheaper and cooler running. Then Nvidia wouldn't have been able to do the extra tweaking.
I still don't see any reason for anyone to buy one, even with the latest tweaks.

But surely the fact NV haven't released it means AMD have the upper hand?
