Market research

In determining its smartphone strategy Acer conducted a survey of over 30,000 consumers to see what they wanted from mobile data services. It turns out that the costs of mobile data plans are still the main factor preventing uptake.

"According to our research, usage-driven attitudes can explain the differences between consumers more so than geographical or cultural backgrounds," said Aymar de Lencquesaing, VP and president of the Acer Smart Handheld Business Group. "It is therefore necessary to personalize products according to consumer needs, while reflecting preferences in style and usage at the regional level."

The study concluded there are three main types of smartphone consumer. The first is the demanding user who fully understands the capabilities of their devices, the second is a pragmatic business user who just wants the thing to work and the third is the style-conscious user for whom the smartphone is some kind of status symbol.

The reason Acer shared this research with us appears to be indicate the kind of consumers these new handsets are designed to appeal to.
