Cram in the RAM

Apple's highly-anticipated iPhone 4 may well have twice as much RAM as the iPad, despite being much smaller than the tablet.

The company confirmed the new iPhone has 512MB of RAM at one of its WWDC developer sessions, according to Apple-watcher MacRumours.com.  Experts predict the extra room could lead to some apps being upgraded or specially developed to make use of the extra memory.

The reason for the iPhone 4's extra RAM, also double that of the iPhone 3GS is uncertain, but could be in order to enable the multi-tasking capabilities of the new handset.

Apple's updated operating system, iOS 4 can run using the memory of the iPad or iPhone 3GS, yet the extra memory would assist with increasingly active apps and future memory-hungry apps.  However, the iPhone 4 might also need extra memory to cope with the 720p movie recording, especially for iMovie.

The iPhone 4's memory count puts it on a par with high-end Android phones in terms of RAM, although its main Android rival, the Evo 4G has 1GB.  The extra space on Google's platform is often used to deal with its memory management, as the operating system is more Ram hungry than iOS in some situations.

Because the iPad 8J is coming out next year.

Or whichever irrelevant number/letter combination they pick this time round.

And with another Ā£/$100s added to the price. No doubt 1000s will still upgrade.
Of course, who wants the old model leaving you with a tiny ipeen.

… to maximise their profit!

It's not like this was a high risk product launch now is it…?

Wonder how much iMemory costs :)
Yet another reason that Apple hardware is rubbish…. I mean come on, does anyone think they are serious about multi-tasking which such a small amount of RAM? Even my HTC Desire has 576mb of RAM… vastly superior for multitasking!
