Tomorrow, next month, next year, or three years down the line?
Orla Sheridan, the Manager of the Entertainment and Devices Division for Microsoft Ireland, has revealed in an interview on Irish news site, Silicon Republic, that an increase in the number of movies available to download via the XBox live marketplace from 40 to 400 is 'imminent', bringing the service in line with what US consumers are currently enjoying. Our intention is to increase the number of movies available for download to Irish Xbox Live users from 40 to up to 400. The expansion for this is imminent.
At present, users in America can download between 300 and 400 standard and high-definition movies and we want to make this available in Ireland, possibly within days. We also intend to introduce TV boxset products such as The Sopranos and Desperate Housewives for rental and this will hopefully happen later this year," said Sheridan in the interview.
The word 'imminent' does suggest that the increase in titles is literally just around the corner, but a UK Microsoft rep has since stepped forward to suppress our excitement for a little bit longer: “I think what Orla meant to say by “imminently” is “at some stage in the future”. We’ve just launched Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix last week, and with more content to come in the coming weeks, we’re always looking to bolster our Live Video Store offering in Europe,” they said.
So, Microsoft are set to bring the UK Xbox 360 video marketplace in line with the US, we just don't know whether it will be tomorrow, next month, next year, or three years down the line. Hang on this isn't a news story then is it? Oh well, too late now.
