How much chip performance will be needed for next-gen comms and modems?

Though the specification hasn't even been finalised yet, superfast 5G was a definite talking point at Mobile World Congress 2016.

The extra processing demands for seamless operation means that more powerful yet efficient CPUs will be required. ARM believes that the recently-announced Cortex-R8 is a good fit for powering 5G modems that we'll likely see at the end of the decade.

Presently, however, premium enthusiast and enterprise storage hardware requires more processing power than ever before, so ARM's Neil Werdmuller, in this interview, builds a case for requiring improved controller support.
