Benchmarks: Iometer and File Copy

We have two four-bay Qnap NAS solutions in our line-up; the £625 TS-469 Pro, armed with a dual-core 2.13GHz Intel Atom processor; and the £400 TS-421, armed with a single-core 2.0GHz Marvell processor.

The gulf in price and positioning is reflected in our performance benchmarks. The TS-421 is one of Qnap's budget four-bay solutions, and its single-core processor offers limited performance. We managed 87MB/s and 44MB/s, respectively, in our 64KB sequential read and write tests. Putting those numbers into perspective, our File Copy benchmark - which entails transferring 8.83GB of mixed-sized files to the NAS - averaged a basic 39MB/s, taking over three minutes to complete the transfer.
