Final thoughts and rating

Belkin's Play Max router is a tale of two vital ingredients; hardware and software.

On the hardware front, the router is compact, looks smart, performs well and showed us no signs of instability throughout a week of heavy usage.

Dual-band Wireless N and Gigabit Ethernet top the feature list, and preset security settings ensure that even network amateurs won't be out of their depth.

Unfortunately, it's the router's software that detracts from the overall experience. Despite making the install process a breeze, Belkin's bundled setup utility automatically installs a number of associated apps; many of which unnecessarily complicate the user experience and offer little real-world benefit.

We're all for routers that offer more out-the-box functionality, but there's a fine line between useful apps and bloatware, and Belkin's early attempts are leaning dangerously close to the latter.

Ignore the bundled software suite and you're left with a solid combination of a feature-packed router and a competent web-based admin panel.

The Good

Easy to setup
Offers both dual-band wireless and Gigabit Ethernet
Cafe-Style guest network works a treat

The Bad

Apps are hugely disappointing
No activity indicators
Poor network storage performance

Maybe it's just me, but I would have expected some indication of how good the routers performance on a Gigabit network was.

Just doing a 10/100 test does seem cutting it a little short…
I have a Linksys WAG320N and while being cheaper it also offers everything that one does while adding a few high end things. Been rock solid for me and would recommend it to anyone.

+1 here.

Otherwise though, thank you Hexus. I've been eyeing this router for a little while now, and wondered if this ‘self-healing’ business was just marketing.
This is our first router review for a while. Just getting the infrastructure into place, but wanted to give you guys a quick look at the Belkin Play Max. :)
The design reminds me of the old 2wire routers, why dont they just do an ‘apple-esque’ aluminium one or something.
