Conclusion

...Sapphire makes a strong case as the go-to brand for the nascent GPU with its trio of Nitro cards priced at reasonable levels.

We're in a better position now to truly evaluate the Radeon RX 480 after a few cards have passed through the labs.

Sapphire makes a strong case as the go-to brand for the nascent GPU with its trio of Nitro cards priced at reasonable levels. The 4GB model, mostly on pre-order for £200, matches the reference card's pure benchmark performance even though it's hamstrung by slower memory. It's able to do this because it maintains the boost speed through gruelling testing.

And performance from the card is handsome at either FHD or QHD resolutions, particularly if you game at its strengths of Vulkan and DX12. Nicely built and looking the business, our only reservation, for the moment, is the unexpected fan-speed profile caused by the Radeon Control Centre taking charge of cooling. We're hopeful it will be resolved in an update soon.

The 8GB Nitro OC, meanwhile, fetches a £50 premium and delivers performance that's just a few per cent better. One can argue that the double-sized buffer is more important moving forwards, though the capabilities of the GPU's engine is likely to falter before limitations in onboard memory really come to play. Really, we'd want to see a 10 per cent price premium for the 8GB card, not the current 20 per cent or so.

Sapphire has proved it has the wherewithal to produce decent Radeon RX 480s without the user breaking the bank. If it was our money and budget was tight, the nod would have to go to the Nitro 4GB priced at £200.

The Good

The Bad
Attractive cards
Sensible pricing
Excellent Vulkan performance
Three-year warranty

Little benefit for extra RAM
Can get noisy (for now)
No memory overclocking

£200 card going toe to toe with a £300 card depending on the game and engine. And it looks like it'll just get better going forward. Will we l see a 1060 price chop now that the competition is properly established?

Even the reference isn't £200, but I'll give you a hint (this isn't the reference model)

The 4Gb is £200 and available from scan/overclockers…

Any how pleased with those benchmarks. Had a 8Gb model on preorder for a while now. Can't wait for it to arrive as it should leave my 580 in the dust. I'd rather have the extra memory personally as I've hit the limits on the 1.5Gb on the 580 a few times and I imagine I'll keep this card for a while (which is why good DX12/Vulkan performance is essential).

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/sapphire-radeon-rx-480-nitro-4096mb-gddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-37d-sp.html for £199.99 or https://www.scan.co.uk/products/nda-4gb-sapphire-radeon-rx-480-nitroplus-14nm-polaris-pcie-30-7000mhz-gddr5-1208mhz-gpu-1306mhz-boos for £199.54 (linked from the article).

Think I might need a bit more help with that hint!
Forgot to say thank you Tarinder. Been badgering you for this review for a while.
