Conclusion

...sheer speed will be all the justification that most enthusiasts need, but there's extra incentive in the form of an eye-catching design...

Nvidia's GeForce GTX 980 remains the premier GPU as we head into the holiday season. Rumours swirl of an upcoming high-end Radeon, but as it stands, Nvidia holds the single-GPU performance crown thanks to an efficient Maxwell architecture that deliver bags of performance in an elegant package.

Taking the reference design up to another level, the Galax Hall of Fame delivers the highest shipping frequency we've seen on a GTX 980 to date. Clocked up to 1,418MHz right out of the box, the HOF has easily topped our performance charts and goes unchallenged as the quickest single-GPU graphics card we've tested.

The sheer speed will be all the justification that most enthusiasts need, but there's extra incentive in the form of an eye-catching design that incorporates a white PCB, a silver aluminium backplate and a three-fan cooler that delivers low temps without deafening noise.

Is this the GTX 980 that every enthusiast should have on their radar? Perhaps so, but not even the HOF is perfect. Galax has missed a trick by not turning off the fans when idle, and considering the £500 fee, we had expected factory-overclocked memory as standard.

Still, if you're looking for a GTX 980 that looks fantastic, goes like the clappers and eats up overclocks for breakfast, the HOF is a certain contender.

Not having the fans turn off at idle is a shame, but with the Maxwell II Tweaker utility which is available to download, it's easy enough to mod the bios to force the fans to turn off. The fact that the card has dual bioses makes it a pretty low-risk option, too.
Why do 980s need 2 8pin connectors if they use so little power, 2 6pin connectors could run this fine and wouldn't mean me getting a new PSU to power em!

- Overclocking. Power consumption increases dramatically with it…

They have a low average draw, but they can get pretty peaky (see http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-970-maxwell,3941-12.html). Dual 8 pins means no chance of melting wires.
