3DMark 11 is the latest version of this hugely-popular synthetic benchmark. Making use of DX11 features such as tessellation, compute shaders and multi-threading, it provides modern-day results and is available as a free download.

The only difference between the two Radeon HD 7970 GE (GHz Edition) bars is with the driver used. Cat 12.11 provides an 8.9 per cent boost at the Performance preset and 6.8 per cent uptick at the Extreme test, for free. Still, the GPU Boosting GeForce GTX 680 just about manages to keep the Radeon at bay.

The standalone Aliens vs. Predator benchmark uses DX11 features such as hardware tessellation and advanced shadow sampling to draw and animate everyone's favourite xenomorph.

Performance increases are smaller in Aliens vs. Predator, amounting to 3.6 per cent at 1080p. It doesn't really matter, however, as the AMD card is fundamentally better than the NVIDIA GeForce in this test.
