The processor as supplied by Intel was a C1 stepping processor much like the 2.8GHz version before it. This means the same default core voltage of 1.525 Volts however the L1 cache layout has reverted back to pre C1 stepping P4 days. Here's 3 screenshots to illustrate.

Back when Tarinder looked at the 2.8GHz P4 for Hexus, he had this to say about the layout change.

The doubling of this entry seems to stand out here. Maybe useful for future Hyper-threading ?

That doesn't seem to be the case. Whatever the reason for the change for the 2.8GHz processor I'm unsure now as to what it is. The processor itself looks like any other regular Socket 478 Pentium 4 processor, no changes there.


3.06GHz Pentium 4 laid bare


One change in the packaging of the retail coolers is the heatsink. From this processor onwards, Pentium 4's will ship with an updated cooler with a copper core to cope with the extra heat from all the extra MHz.

As always, benchmarks were run 3 times and the upper and lower results discarded to leave the median result for the graphs. If any result differed by more than 5% from the other 2, all 3 results were discarded and a fresh 3 results were obtained. Excepting SETI due to the time taken to complete this benchmark.

Benchmarks were run with HyperThreading enabled and disabled to see what effect, if any, it would have on results. Remembering all Hexus benchmark tests are multiprocessor unaware and generally single threaded for their computationally intensive sections so HyperThreading's impact will generally be minimal. We'll discuss the merits or disadvantages depending on how you see it of not changing our benchmark suite to accomodate HyperThreading and SMP in general at the end of the review.
