Overclocking

Now that overclocking is achieved by increasing the multiplier on 'K' chips, we used the stock Intel fan - a chunky unit that looks rather similar to the default cooler for the 980X chip - pushed the fan-mode to performance, and then dialled-in settings by tweaking the BIOS on the ASUS P67 motherboard. The top-line 2600K was used.

After a little adventure in the BIOS, involving ramping up the CPU voltage to 1.45V, we arrived at a rock-solid speed of 4,739.2MHz (46x103MHz bus speed). Yup, you've read that right: almost 5GHz with a basic air cooler, and here's the proof.

We then ran the HEXUS.PiFast, wPrime, and CINEBENCH R11 tests with the overclocked chip.

Yup, you begin to wonder whether the X58 platform is now worth it.
