Intel DSX58SO motherboard

The Intel  DX58SO - also known as Smackover - looking lean and mean in black.

There's plenty of big-ass cooling around the board but the heatsinks do become warm to the touch. We're glad that they're all passively-cooled, though.

There's enough room around the socket area to fit in the reference cooler with consummate ease. The only slightly sticky point is with the two ASICs next to the top-left mounting hole - they come close to fouling the heatsink.

We're befuddled why Intel would choose to launch a board with four DIMM slots, knowing that the memory controller works best in tri-channel mode.

The ICH10 is a known quantity.

Another slight letdown comes in the form of only two PCIe x16 slots. We appreciate that few users will opt for a three- or four-card setup, but Intel really should have added it here.

The backplane is chock-full of goodness, though, including dual eSATA support.

I guess it's notjust HEXUS who are beffudled about WHY they would install 4 ram slots on this mobo?

V intriguing
quality. i cant wait!
It has no use - I've asked up to board designer level.

The fact is - 3 slots will get you the performance and 4 will make it slower. The reasoning? One thing touted around is with the Smackover board people would feel odd if there were less than 4 slots. So maybe it's marketing? Most boards will ship with 3 or 6 slots it's just a change of mindset.
Hexus
Initially supporting three 64-bit DDR3-only channels at 1,066MHz speed

Does this mean they dont have any benefits from 1333 or faster at present?

Native it will be 1066 - but if you change the memory speed in the BIOS you will get the perf increase.
