Performance

We start by putting the hurt on our overclocked Core i7-3570K processor by running a demanding Prime95 stress test. This is effectively a worst-case scenario for CPU heat and the Silent Base 800 copes well by keeping the chip running below the 70ºC mark when outfitted with an Arctic Cooling Freezer 13. CPU cooling performance is solid.

The numbers are less impressive on the graphics front. Our test platform has a pair of hot-running Radeon HD 7950 OC graphics cards and core temperature hit 80ºC during our benchmarks. Still well within the limits of the GPU, mind, and readers should note that these readings were taken with the side vent closed. Opening said vent and removing the panel covering the front intakes does lower under-load temperature by a further few degrees.

During use, we found our test platform to be practically inaudible when idle, but noise levels do understandably rise when the dual Radeons are kicked into action.

The results highlight the age of our chassis-testing hardware. Radeon HD 7950s are still potent parts, but be quiet!'s Silent Base 800 is geared for quieter components and we're working to revamp our test platform accordingly. Put a couple of GTX 970s in here and we'd be willing to bet that a) GPU temperature would be lower and b) under-load noise levels would be reduced significantly.
