Read speeds of up to 200 MB/s and write speeds of up to 100 MB/s

Micron's new high speed NAND, co-developed with Intel on a 50nm process node, promises to slash data transfer times later this year.

It's 8 gigabit single-level cell (SLC) high speed NAND can read data at up to 200 megabytes per second and write data at speeds of up to 100 megabytes per second. In order to do so, it uses the new ONFI 2.0 specification and a four plane architecture with higher clock speeds.

Micron's high speed NAND is sampling to major OEMs now and mass production is expected in the second half of 2008. Meaning we'll soon have SSDs and memory cards faster than any currently available. They'll come at a premium cost of course, SLC NAND costs more than MLC NAND and you'll see that reflect in prices.

Bill Lauer, senior director of marketing for Microns memory group says:

"As more and more of todays popular consumer electronic and computing devices continue to move to silicon for storage, it is essential that we improve how data is accessed and transferred in NAND. With the new capabilities designed into high speed NAND, the performance benefits will be visible to the consumer, allowing them to experience a faster way of transferring digital content between devices such as computers, digital cameras, MP3 players and cell phones."
