At the end of last week we reported that Google had launched a Chrome add-on that let you contribute your tabs to help raise money for a number of good causes. Now those tabs have been tallied, and the search-giant has divvied up its donation between five different charities.

The lion's share of the tabs - and the money - went to Doctors Without Borders, which managed to collect 16,200,412 donations, or 26.7 per cent of the 60,599,541 total tabs. This worked out to $267,336, buying a total of 106,934 vaccinations to help protect against meningitis outbreaks in Africa.

In second place with almost 15 million tabs was The Nature Conservancy which will be able to plant 245,278 trees in Brazil's Atlantic Forrest with the money that Google will donate. Not far behind was charity: water, which will be able to build wells to provide fresh water for 11,640 people in developing countries.

There were obviously no losers here, though, and Un Techo para mi País will be able to build 11,208ft2 of shelter in Latin America and Room to Read will be able to buy almost 150,000 books thanks to the contributions of the world's web surfers.

The 2010 Chrome for a Cause campaign has now come to a close, but you can find out more about where the donations will be going on the Chrome blog.

I sense this as an experiment for a Google currency… :undecided

If tabs make a donation then great. I'm just confused as to how.
