Well, it's not as if we didn't know that it was coming today; Gigebyte's announcement of the X11 11.6in Notebook, which the firm claims to be the 'world's lightest', weighing in at only 975g.

Depending on which end of the device you're at, thicknesses range from an already compact 16.5mm all the way down to 3mm. This thickness and weight are made largely possible by the use of real carbon fibre to form the chassis. Powering the device is an unknown variant of Intel's Ivy Bridge processor and so, the device also features Intel HD 4000 graphics. Other specifications are 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 128GB SSD, Wireless b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0, all running on a mobile HM77 Express chipset. There's also mention of support for Gigabit-Ethernet though, we're unable to spot a port for this anywhere on the device.

Port wise, the device includes a USB 3.0 and Mini DisplayPort on the left; a MicroSD slot, combo audio and USB 2.0 on the right. As we know, the screen is 11.6in, however, for those wondering, it's LED backlit with a resolution is 1,366 x 768.

There are a few interesting little features that Gigabyte has integrated into the X11 beyond just the carbon fibre. One such feature is the use of dual rear-vents, which the firm claims were inspired by high-end sports cars (we suppose you would consider these if you're going to be using carbon fibre in your design), though hopefully the end result is that the device remains cooler, with heat production that isn't as concentrated.

The speakers are also an interesting point of note, as Gigabyte is claiming to have included a large resonator and diaphragm monomer in the X11, despite its size, with adjustments to certain wavelengths, Gigabyte is claiming that the Notebook will provide a nice, clear bass, though at 1W per speaker, we wonder just what is possible. Other little titbits are a glass-fibre touch pad, which the firm claims is more responsive and smoother to touch, along with an island keyboard, 95 per cent the size of a full-blown variant, which should offer a relatively comfortable typing experience.

Gigabyte X11 Ultrabook

The X11 sure packs in a lot for its size and weight and, it'll still feature a standard 35Wh battery, however, at prices likely to be around £900-£1,200, it's certainly quite the premium device, though, we suspect some of our readers may still be interested?

Stick a 17w trinity in one, price it at ~ £600, and I'll consider it ;)

Oh, and get a decent screen resolution. Hate 1366x768. 1280x720 would be preferable, frankly. At least that's a proper HD resolution, not some nasty hybrid…

wtf is wrong with having a higher resolution than 720p?! I mean sure I'd prefer a 16:10, but really you'd rather go lower? Sir I question your wisdom. *glove slap*.

The price point is what kills it imsho. If it was £700 at launch I could see it selling quite well.
No 5GHz wifi? FFS - premium laptop with some crappy wifi card. Just stick in Intel 6300 ultimate and be done with it.

Having said that, if it's got 5 hours+ of browsing battery and costs less than a grand, I might be interested…
Muh, wasn't lighter than the X505…
Given that the mid range 11" Air costs £999 and is identically specced minus the processor… no contest. Apple's one hamstring (besides OS X if you don't like it) is their excessive price and this isn't significantly cheaper. Purely from a business point of view, it makes no sense to price yourself at the same level as the market leaders (especially given that the Air is due for an Ivy Bridge refresh very soon). Undercut or die!
