PRESS RELEASE

Experience a better cloud

Milton Keynes, United Kingdom - 23rd September, 2014 - Synology® today unveiled the beta release of DiskStation Manager (DSM) 5.1, the latest iteration of its award-wining operating system for NAS servers.

"Storage technologies are evolving fast and so is DSM. Version 5.1 boasts a significant amount of new features revolving around three critical concepts: integrating private cloud, broadening sharing possibilities, and enhancing data safety," said Alex Wang, CEO of Synology Inc.

DSM 5.1 delivers many major updates, including:

Protect data with versatile backup and security tools: LUN snapshot is now schedulable and LUN backup performance is 169% faster through network. More packages can be completely backed up. As for system protection, the new Security Advisor scans the system and detects potential vulnerabilities, such as weak passwords, malware, misconfigured services, and pending updates. Packages can now be digitally signed to avoid using tampered executables, while AppArmor enforces stricter file access permissions for programs in DSM. Service-interface binding allows users to assign specific services to dedicated network interfaces for extra security.

Increase productivity: Proxy Server speeds up Internet browsing while securing the network thanks to its various caching, filtering, and authentication options. File Station can now connect to a remote FTP or WebDAV server, while its new email client provides a quicker alternative for file sharing. IPv6 support has been expanded to QuickConnect and more DSM services. NFS VAAI support brings new virtualisation options such as File Clone and Reserve Space. SSD caching technologies is more intuitive with a revamped interface, a real-time hit rate statistics to evaluate the utilisation, and a recommendation on appropriate SSD cache size.

Create a better and more integrated private cloud: File versioning in Cloud Station can now be disabled to save storage space. Cloud Station also supports synchronising data in encrypted folders to protect privacy, as well as Windows ACL for more precise user privileges' setting. Cloud Sync is compatible with more public cloud providers, such as OneDrive, Box or hubiC. In addition, Cloud Sync and all Cloud Station's client software now supports selective sync, allowing users to determine which folders, file types and size to be sync. Cloud backup offers a contingency plan for archives with support for Microsoft Azure, SFR, and hicloud. Furthermore, Glacier Backup now supports file-level dedupe and restoration from Amazon Glacier.

Sharing video, audio, and photo content has never been easier: Video Station now offers a streamlined and more pleasant user experience. The smart search feature and revamped folder page increase usability and efficiency. Video Station will now automatically look for subtitles on Internet. Watch status lets users see at a glance which videos aren't finished yet. The slideshow feature on Photo Station combines background music and transition effects for professional-looking presentation. Share your picture, music or video collections with a public link. In addition, most of the mobile apps have been tweaked; from quick search to improved integration or new design.

Note Station and DS note empower users with flexible and secured collaboration tools: Create, share, and sync thousands of digital notes and notebooks with DSM 5.1. DS note provides Android and iOS users with mobile access to Note Station. In addition to a rich-text editor, media content can be previewed instantly. For group collaboration, Note Station and DS note support, version history, and restoration. In addition, sensitive notes can be encrypted with user-defined passwords.
