January 8 2004, Taipei - Silicon Integrated Systems Corp. (SiS), a leading supplier of core logic chipsets today announced that leading electronics manufacturer Sony Corporation will use the SiS648 chipset in its current and upcoming line of VAIO GR Series of high performance notebook computers. Sony chose the SiS648 chipset because of it's proven performance record in the high-performance desktop market, and will manufacture notebooks with 15, 16, and 17 inch screens based on the SiS648. Furthermore, the Sony VAIO GR series lead the industry in terms of environmental standards, using the most environment friendly production process of any notebook computer to date.

Multimedia Ready
The GR series are equipped with a high performance DVD±RW/CD-RW combo drive that enables users to record and play 4 formats of DVD media. The experience is enhanced by Sony's "Click to DVD™" DVD recording software that makes burning media a breeze.

The notebook screens use the UXGA LCD display with Sony's new XBRITE™ technology for the best in DVD playback and TV viewing. With Sony's Giga Pocket TV tuner, users can record their favorite TV programs or even use the analogue inputs to record from VHS or even Super 8 format.

High Performance and Sony Reliability
The GR series of notebooks are designed for high-performance demanding applications, and SiS was a natural partner with its experience in producing high quality chipsets. Sony consumer products are renowned worldwide for their technological innovation and quality, and their VAIO GR series notebooks are no exception. Utilizing either an Intel® Pentium® 4 /Celeron® processor, the GR series boasts a 533 MHz and 400 MHz system bus respectively-easily comparable to a full sized desktop system. Both models feature the NVIDIA GeForce420 Go Graphics Accelerator for mind-blowing 3D graphics; the GR series can easily be used as a portable LAN gaming machine, giving gamers the option of leaving their heavy desktop system at home where it belongs. And with either 256 or 512 MB of RAM onboard, the GR series can handle the most demanding applications with ease.

A New Standard in Environmental Friendly Computing
SiS was the first chipset company to use a lead-free manufacturing process for an IC, and now Sony, with their VAIO GR series, is the first company to produce a completely lead-free notebook computer. The new GR series uses a completely unleaded manufacturing process, and all components, as well as the case and screen, are completely lead-free. By adopting new standards first, Sony is proud to be leading the computer industry in protecting the health of our environment.
