Acer's flipping, folding, docking, detaching Aspire Switch 10

Acer has taken to the stage at its annual New York City press conference to unveil a range of new products including the Aspire Switch 10.

The 10.1in Windows tablet will be powered by an Intel Atom Z3745 'Bay Trail' processor and, in an effort to stand out amid all the 2-in-1 convertibles, will be marketed as a quad-mode device. In addition to serving as a standalone tablet, the 10.1in device will ship with a detachable keyboard that allows the user to 'switch' to laptop mode, and the keyboard also doubles as a stand for the self-explanatory 'display screen' and 'tent' modes.

Use it any which way appears to be the message, though there's plenty to like elsewhere. Acer's aluminium chassis looks suitably robust, the display is based on IPS technology and should offer excellent viewing angles, stereo speakers are included, and the system will ship with Windows 8.1. There's no mention of battery life just yet, and details regarding UK availability remain sketchy, though there are early hints at pricing, with various sources suggesting that the Switch 10 will debut at around the £299 mark.

As with all the competition, it will have an utterly uninspiring and borderline unusable 1366 x 768 resolution panel, further adding to the utter mess that is the current windows laptop market.

I wouldn't say 1366x768 is unusable, my hp touchpad is only 1024x768 (9.7") IPS and is great for watching some futurama at bedtime ! I admit though that if you are coming from a higher res' screen it might seem primitive.

Sorry to be pedantic but borderline unusable is what i said. Trying to do anything amounts to utter frustration on such a turd resolution. It is the utter devil.

At least with 1024 x 768 its a ‘square’ resolution and therefore a bit better optimised for web browsing

Funny, that's the resolution of the panel I'm typing this comment on but I seem to be managing. It's also the resolution of my TV downstairs, and is somewhat higher than my 7" tablet, both of which I somehow manage to use.

I'm not entirely sure what you're using as your benchmark, but for the Windows 8 user interface 1366x768 is utterly usable. It may not be ideal, but there's nothing actually wrong with it.
