Intel has added a page to its website detailing two new Atom powered Android tablets it wants to flog to education customers. The pair offer different screen sizes, 7-inch and 10-inch, and pretty different tech specs but both tablets feature Atom processors, Wi-Fi, a 2MP camera on the back and a 0.3MP one on the front, a microSD slot, micro USB connector and Intel educational software. Interesting school-science-friendly accessories compatible with either tablet include a snap-on magnification lens and a thermal probe. Intel doesn't detail pricing or availability on its website at this time.
7-inch Intel Education Tablet
This smaller tablet Intel is hoping to appeal to the education market is powered by a single-core Atom Z2420 chip which runs at 1.2GHz, accompanied by 1GB of RAM. The 7-inch screen is a 1024 x 600 resolution affair. Intel claims this 355g, 9.95mm thick tablet with 8GB of built-in storage can run for nearly 8 hours on its 4200mAh battery. Possibly of importance for 'educational environments', this tablet can survive a 60cm drop and is water resistant.
10-inch Intel Education Tablet
Intel's 10-inch educational tablet features the more powerful single-core with hyperthreading Z2460 Atom processor running at 1.6GHz, also complemented by 1GB of RAM. However this time the tablet comes with Android ICS installed. This larger tablet has a 1280 x 800 TFT and a capacitive stylus included. Intel claims this 689g, 13.2mm thick tablet can run for over 6.5 hours on its 6600mAh battery. Again you can augment the storage with a microSD card but this larger tab comes with 16GB built-in storage as standard. You can't drop this one from 60cm, but 50cm is OK, it is similarly water resistant to its smaller brother.
Intel's special pre-installed software suite on both these tablets includes utilities McAfee Mobile Security and Intel Education Theft Deterrent 1.2. For actual educational purposes we have a suite of apps including Engage: Kno Interactive eReader, Lab Camera, PASCO SPARKvue Science application, My Notes Keeper, media camera, ArtRage, Intel education resources and Empower Educators: Classroom Management to manage efficient classrooms and collaboration.
